About the model
The Globe is a mechanical model of the Earth with a gear train, a pendulum regulator and two satellites that orbit the sphere.
The globe sits on an axle tilted at the same angle as the Earth's axis. A rubber-band motor drives it, wound by the lever on the base: one full turn clockwise, let go, and the gears set the sphere turning. A pendulum mechanism slows the rotation down. You can also turn the globe by hand and watch the continents pass at your own pace.
Two interchangeable modules come with it: the Shuttle and the Sputnik. Linked by planetary gearing, the satellites rotate almost twice as fast as the globe and complete almost two orbits per pull of the lever. A project for a long evening – 184 parts, about 4 hours.
