Every product page shows a build time, for example »about 5 hours«. The figure comes from the manufacturer and is a guideline. It tells you what order of magnitude to plan for — not when you have to be finished.
The range across the catalogue
The smallest models take about half an hour to build. The Millennium Falcon™, the largest kit in the range with 1,235 parts, is rated at around 50 hours. Almost everything lies in between: an afternoon, a weekend, several weeks of one evening each.
How to read the figure
- about 5 hours — an estimate for the whole model.
- about 2–3 hours — the manufacturer gives a range instead of a single figure.
- no figure — no time is available for this model, or it is delivered pre-assembled.
Why it can take longer
Your first model. With your first kit you also learn how parts come out of the board, how tightly wood fits and how the illustrated instructions work. That time disappears with the second model.
Moving parts. Gears, axles and spring mechanisms need to run smoothly. Where something catches, you sand and wax it — some models include sandpaper and wax for this. The more mechanics a model has, the more of these steps there are.
Checking along the way. If you briefly test after each assembly whether everything turns, it takes longer — and you are not hunting for the fault at the end.
Several sessions. Hardly anyone builds a large model in one go. When you pick it up again after a break, it takes a few minutes to find your place in the instructions.
Time and difficulty are two different things
A long build time does not automatically mean a model is hard. The X-wing Starfighter™ is rated medium and takes about 20 hours; the safe with combination lock has 179 parts and counts as challenging. How to read the levels is explained in the article Which difficulty suits whom?
Rule of thumb for your first kit
Plan generously. A model rated at about 5 hours is one good evening and half of a second. And if it takes longer: that is not a sign that something is going wrong. It is the part you buy a model like this for.
