Description

The Mechanical Aquarium is a wooden saltwater tank with a spring motor – two tropical fish circle through a forest of algae where a seahorse hides.

The fish and algae rotate at the same time, at different speeds and in different directions. As they move, the fish swing their heads and tails from side to side, so they really look like they are swimming. A metal spring drives the model instead of a rubber band, and an internal pendulum regulates and smooths the motion.

To start it, wind the knob under the tank about 25 half-turns and flip the switch from “Stop” to “Swim”. Fish and algae then move for about 40 seconds, and you can stop them at any time. A project for a full day – 325 parts, about 6 hours.
