Description

Research Vessel: a ship model inspired by modern icebreakers and survey ships, with a swing jib crane, a bathyscaphe and a pendulum-regulated drive.

A rubber band motor supplies the power and a pendulum regulates it. The gears in this assembly are arranged to imitate the sound of a diesel engine and keep the ship moving at a smooth, steady pace. A lever lets you choose one of three movement modes: forward, turning or automatic manoeuvring.

Use the swing jib crane to lift the bathyscaphe, the deep-sea diving sphere, out of the water and secure it on its platform. The skeleton-style hull gives you a view into the cargo hold and the engine room. A project for several evenings – 575 parts, about 10 hours.
