Description

Mechanical Tellurion – Sun, Earth and Moon as a gear model: day and night, lunar phases and seasons, all driven by one handle.

Turn the handle and the closely calibrated gear system starts moving: one turn equals one rotation of the Earth on its axis, in other words one day. You see why day turns into night, what causes the phases of the Moon and why the seasons change. The Earth's axis is tilted at 23.5 degrees, and a graphic shows the signs of the zodiac.

You can set the model to today's date: point the seasons dial to midwinter or midsummer, turn the handle forward or back by the number of days from the nearest solstice, then use the upper gear disk to put the Moon in its current phase. A project for a weekend – 249 parts, about 5 hours.
