About the model
The Turnbalista is a kit made up of an archer's tower and a ballista – levers, pulleys and gears show how the siege engine works.
The model draws on a siege weapon of antiquity: the ballista was a Greco-Roman throwing machine that could be loaded with stones, lead balls or incendiaries. Its forerunners were torsion catapults. Against castle walls that were considered almost impregnable, attackers often had no choice but to lay siege.
The design takes its cue from steampunk. The mechanism stays open, so you can follow the leverage, pulleys and gear train in detail – not just a display piece, but a working replica.
A project for one or two evenings – 292 parts, about 4–8 hours, intermediate difficulty.
