About the model
The Variator is a fully functional wooden replica of a continuously variable transmission – specifically a belt-driven friction cone CVT.
A variator transfers the engine's torque and adjusts it by changing the gear ratio. Most drivers know it as a continuously variable transmission, or CVT. It is used wherever gear ratios need to change seamlessly: in cars, motor scooters, snowmobiles, conveyors and metal-cutting machines.
On the model, you drive the belt by hand via the reducer, and it transfers the rotation to the driven cone pulleys. Use the transmission fork to change gears and watch the driven cone pulley speed up or slow down while the drive pulley keeps the same speed. The open design lets you follow the whole process.
A project for an afternoon – 104 parts, about 4 hours, recommended from age 8.
