UGEARS models are mechanical wooden model kits. You press the parts out of laser-cut plywood boards and slot them together without glue. With most models, the result is a working mechanism: a spring drive, a rubber-band motor, a pendulum or a crank. The range goes from 8 parts and half an hour to 1,235 parts and around 50 hours.
Material: laser-cut plywood
Every kit consists of flat plywood boards with the parts pre-cut in them. They are pressed out with your fingers and fit so tightly that the joints hold without glue. The wood is untreated, and the grain stays visible.
Not every model is made entirely of wood. Depending on the design, rubber bands for the drive, metal parts, cardboard or LED lighting are added — wherever plywood would be too soft or too thick. What a model is made of is stated on its product page.
The difference from a 3D puzzle
A 3D puzzle made of wood or cardboard produces a shape: once the last piece is in place, it is finished. A mechanical model produces a construction that works afterwards. That is the core of the difference, and it determines what you do with the finished model.
- The clocks tell the time once wound up. Escapement, pendulum and gears are out in the open.
- The safe has a working combination lock with a code you set yourself.
- The marble runs lift the marbles to the top with a crank and let them roll back down over chutes and seesaws.
- The steam locomotives run on a rubber-band motor, the V-Express about four metres.
The range also includes models without a mechanism — such as the models to paint for kids from about age 4. They are closer to the classic 3D puzzle, and that is intentional: with them, the brush comes after the building.

Wood instead of plastic: compared with building bricks
If you are used to building bricks, you are building something different here. The parts are pressed out of boards, some edges smoothed, moving parts treated with wax. A finished model can certainly be taken apart — but the joints are designed to be assembled once. In practice, a model is built once and then stays that way.

Both are good building projects. They are just not the same thing.
How much effort it takes
The smallest models have 8 parts and are built in half an hour. The Millennium Falcon™ has 1,235 parts and takes around 50 hours. Almost everything lies in between: an afternoon, a weekend, several weeks of one evening each.

What age they are for
The age recommendation comes from the manufacturer and is stated in the instructions. The models to paint are rated from about age 4, some small models and the Advent calendars from about age 8, and most from about age 14. UGEARS is a Ukrainian brand, founded in 2014. Production takes place in the EU. Behind ugears.de is Ligna Arts, the official importer for Germany. We ship from our warehouse in Essen, within Germany in 1–3 working days.
If a part breaks while you are building, you get a replacement. Spare parts are free — they come from the manufacturer within the EU, with no customs fees.
