About the model
The Differential STEM Lab is a learning model that shows you why the drive wheels on one axle can turn at different speeds.
In a bend, the wheels on one axle cover different distances. The differential compensates for this: both wheels turn at different speeds, the car takes the corner without slipping, and tire wear is reduced.
Try it yourself on the model: set the lever to position 1 (up), then set both wheels in motion via the drive wheel or one of the wheels. Turn the control lever left or right and it gently brakes the left or right wheel. In the other lever position, both wheels are rigidly coupled and can only turn or lock together.
A project for an afternoon – 163 parts, about 2 hours, easy difficulty.
Key features:
- Hand-driven via the drive wheel or one wheel
- Lever in position 1: the wheels turn at different speeds
- Control lever brakes the left and right wheel independently
- Locked position: both wheels rigidly coupled
- Stylized model for understanding the working principles
Dimensions: 17.5 × 13.5 × 10.5 cm.
