Description
Hurdy-Gurdy – a playable wooden string instrument with two strings and six keys.
On a hurdy-gurdy, a hand-cranked wheel rubs against the strings, much like a bow on a violin. Turn the crank with one hand to sound the drone, and press the wooden keys with the other to change the pitch of the melody string. The six keys give you six notes, and releasing them all produces a seventh.
The design draws on the work of Celtic and Scandinavian instrument makers of the Middle Ages. A project for a long afternoon – 292 parts, about 4–5 hours. Sheet music in tablature form is included.
Key features:
- Two strings: melody and bourdon (drone)
- Bourdon string tunes in unison or to an interval: fourth, fifth or octave
- Six keys with rubber bands and small cranks
- Adjustable string height for fine-tuning the sound
- Body, front and back decks, gears, crank, wheel, neck and tuning pegs
