About the model
The Automaton Cyclist is a wooden racing cyclist driven by a flywheel – pull the lever and he is off.
It is inspired by classic Tour de France imagery. At its heart is a flywheel that stores kinetic energy through its weight. Pull the lever on the side, the flywheel picks up speed, and the cyclist launches into motion.
The model shows clearly how weight changes the way a flywheel works: a dedicated slot takes a coin, a screw nut or anything else that fits. More weight changes the momentum of the mechanism – experimenting is encouraged.
A project for an evening or two – 189 parts, about 4 hours. A good gift for cycling fans and a piece of décor for home or office.
