About the model
Pendulum STEM Lab – a learning model with an anchor escapement that shows how a clockwork keeps time.
The pendulum is one of the most fundamental and reliable timekeeping mechanisms. In the model it swings under the gravity of its weight, while a rubber band feeds energy back through the gear train to make up for lost kinetic energy. The anchor escapement controls the frequency of the swings, and a ratchet with pawl reduces running errors. The whole mechanism is driven via a winding wheel.
And you can experiment: how fast the pendulum swings depends on the weight, its height on the pendulum and the tension of the rubber band. A project for an afternoon – 92 parts, about 2 hours.
Key features:
- Anchor escapement controlling the swing frequency
- Escape wheel, gear train and winding wheel
- Rubber band as the energy store
- Ratchet with pawl
- Frequency adjustable via the weight, its position and the band tension
Finished size: 11.5 × 8.3 × 16.7 cm.
